Flames match grosses k34m

The Africa Nations Championship (Chan) first round, first leg play-offs qualifier between Malawi and Comoros at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday grossed K34.3 million.

The figure was K4 million less than what was grossed during the first leg at the same venue six days earlier.

According to the gate revenue reconciliation form, K19.5 million was realised through pre-sale of tickets while match day collections amounted to K14.7 million.

Expenses totalled K16.8 million, including gate management and security, leaving a net revenue of about K17.5 million from which Football Association of Malawi (FAM) received K12.2 million, translating to 70 percent of the net.

Stadium owners Ministry of Youth and Sports received K4.36 million, which was 25 percent of the net while Malawi National Council of Sports got K873 184.95, representing five percent.

FAM marketing and broadcasting manager Tulipo Mwenelupembe had not responded to our questionnaire by press time on whether the gross revenue reflected the turnout.

But Ministry of Youth and Sports spokesperson Macmillan Mwale bemoaned loopholes in the revenue generation process.

“Operational costs remain huge as after almost every event there are some losses due to theft and vandalism. Ownership spirit needs to be incarnated in the users to curb the malpractices,” said Mwale.

“There is also need for more collaboration with event organisers to enhance security and close loopholes in revenue generation process, otherwise it was not bad.”

The Flames won the match 2-0 to qualify for the second round of the play-offs 4-0 on aggregate.
